Out of 15 photos of individuals dealing with criminal charges: 4 were white males, 1 was a white female, 8 were African-American males and 3 were African-American females.
Out of 9 photos of individuals dealing with politics: 12 were white males, 4 were white females and none were African-Americans.
In class we learned about the five different stages that minorities get covered in the press. Stage one is the Exclusionary stage - the minority receives no coverage in this stage. An example of this is Asian-Americans in the colonial press. Next is the Threatening-Issue stage and that is followed by the Confrontation stage. An example of this would be when settlers would tell stories of the Indians coming to kill settlers. The fourth is the Stereotypic Selection stage which focus is on minorities who are super successful (Tiger Woods) or people who are still considered dangerous or fear worthy (OJ Simpson). The last is the Integrated Coverage stage - everyone gets the same amount of coverage.
From the data I collected over a weeks time can show that the American society is nowhere near the final stage.
